I know we were asked to keep the media diary for the previous week, but since I didn’t have any internet access at home, it was basically 1-2 hours at the library and not every day, so I considered it a better idea to make one when I was actually able to comment on my media consumption. Usually when I’m on my computer, I do all kinds of things simultaneously, listen/watch/read/write/ socialize/check e-mails, so it’s difficult to organize it into time limits and separate different activities, but I tried as much as possible to outline my everyday media consumption process. What I can personally get from my diary is that obviously I am an everyday dedicated consumer of the media, although my use of different types of media has definitely changed over the last 2 weeks, since I moved to the UK. I was generally used to watching/listening to the news every day, at least once a day, and being completely aware of what was going on in my country and most important things from abroad. But without internet/TV, I was mainly relying on my radio for information and my computer and DVDs for entertainment. It is obvious to me that my media diary over the last three days is much more representative of what I usually do/see/hear/experience, rather than what it would have been before my internet access and access to online radio/TV and all types of virtual news sources. What my diary could say to someone who doesn’t know me is probably that I depend on media a great deal in my everyday life to be informed and to entertain myself. You could notice that I am a music/movie lover and also spend a great deal on the internet besides the usual entertainment, also researching or writing, blogging, “facebooking”, etc. What I can conclude from all that is that today media is completely integrated into our lives, whereby we depend on it not only for information, but for communication, for entertainment, as well as opportunities to facilitate our lives, like paying our bills online without even leaving the house. In general, a social being cannot be complete without consuming any kind of media on a regular basis, due to the fact that they will be completely isolated from their environment and unaware of anything important happening around them. Media today means a great deal and forms an important part of our daily lives, our social understanding and general view on society. Labels: tasks |
