From the media diary that I kept last week, I picked an independent French movie called "Le Premier Cercle" (Inside Ring) and did some research related to our individual questions.
1. What is the name of the company that produced it? - The movie was produced by two French production companies - Thelma Films and Alter Films.
2. Is it a major or an independent? - They are both independent production companies, located in Paris, France.
3. Who owns this company? - Thelma Films is a cinematographic production company created in 2004 by producer Christine Gozlan, who is the current president. Alter Films was created by Alain Terzian, now Chief executive officer.
4. What other companies do they own? - Christine Gozlan was previously involved in Cinevalse and Sara Films as a director of production, presently she doesn't own any other companies, she is only involved with Thelma Films and a member of the council administration for UPF (Union des Producteurs Francais). Alain Terzian started as a producer with "T Films" and "Messine Productions", presently he is also president of the UPF, administrator of the Cannes Festival Jury, president of the Cesar Academy and the French Academy of Motion Pictures.
5. What other objects do they make? - Both production companies are mainly involved in producing French feature films. Their production is not very large, Thelma Films has produced only 10 movies since it's founding in 2004, whereas Alter Films has produced even less - only 16 features since 1958.
6. What is the turnover of this company? - Since they are both French independent companies, it was really hard to get that information from any source. But I suppose it is not very high. From the 10 movies Thelma Films has produced, only one stars an internationally famous French actors - Sophie Marceau and Christopher Lambert, whereby that number is 3 from the 16 Alter Film pictures with all three starring Sophie Marceau and 2 of them also starring brilliant Vincent Perez.
7. How do they make their money? - Both production companies make profit producing French independent feature films, most of which are released only in France and star unknown to the world actors (probably famous in France only).
8. Why was this object made? - This movie was firstly made to entertain, which is basically the main reason all movies are produced. But it has also a few other reasons behind it. For instance, it has a specific message - it is an immigrant crime story, sheding light the Armenian holocost in Turkey during World War I. Moreover, it is paying a tribute to good old French gangster movies, such as the Sicilian Clan which was a peak of French commercial movie making in the 1970s.
