We started off by talking about the confusion that surrounded the whole 'blogging situation'. Once we sorted out the problem with the blogs, we went to terminology, because some people didn't understand the word ' ethnography'. We all thought it meant ethnicity, but it means; age, religious believe, culture, class, etc.
Then, we started to discuss modernity and post-modernity, what each meant, its negatives and positives.
When the question was asked 'What is modernity?', some of us said it was mainstream, others said "it takes itself serious" and it meant 'new believes'.
What i understood was that Modernity meant, Finding the problem and fixing it and Post-modernity means when the problem is fixed but after a while it doesn't work and everything goes wrong - When we start to question what we never questioned. ( Questioning the authority, Loosing faith in an institution)
An example which i came up with was Michael Jackson. In the beginning he was not only known as ' The King of Pop' but he also had an innocent image. He was presented in the media as a good guy, but after the Child Molesting allegation everybody started doubting him. Everybody was asking questions; " Did he really do it?" , " Why does he have so many kids around?" and etc.
What i also understood was that Post-Modernity provides freedom of choice, believing whatever you want to believe. Which makes everybody selfish as they just think of what would benefit them, while Modernity provided unity of culture.
The freedom of choice that post-modernity provides has consequences as people can do whatever they like and they are not told what is correct and what isn't. For instance the X-factor, 'The Twins' are being voted through every round even though it's clear to the public that they cant perform, whether it is singing or dancing, but they are still voted through. This can be really controversial if they win the competition!
Then, we talked about ' Why the press was so quiet on the death of Steven Gately?'. I believe the answer is because his death was natural. He didn't die from sex, drugs and Rock'N'Roll. He just died and the people could not believe, because he was in Majorca out partying so everyone is thinking he drank too much or he overdosed. Mainly the press couldn't believe his natural death and dug deep into the situation to find one little thing to write a story about, because that's what the press do. They find one little truth and stretch it as far as it goes.Labels: tasks |
