For the seminar Bashir and I along with the rest of our group had prepared notes on the Metro newspaper the chosen media item from our group diaries. This however was not covered in the meeting with Spencer. Instead we discussed any problems we had come across so far in the course.
The first thing we discussed was blogging. Blogging our work instead of the more traditional way of paper handing in coursework. Many questions were raised about what we blog, when, and on what programme/website we blog. Other housekeeping points were made by Spencer such as how attendance is tracked not only to lectures, film club and the Coventry Conversations. From our blogs tutors can track if we have been to these. Spencer then discussed any difficulty with terminology with have for example the word "ethnology" which we found does not just relate to ethnicity. Gender, age, religion and class also relates to “ethnology”.
We then discussed the terms "post modernity" and "modernity". Modernity relates to the way people look at this nowadays and post modernity relates to how some things e.g. films don’t take themselves seriously. An example of a post modernity film is Moulin Rouge. In Moulin Rouge the characters do not take themselves seriously until hate, jealously and betrayal are introduced.
Post modernity refers to the way in which people look and respond to things such as facebook rather than educational programmes/websites such as bbc- news related.
Spencer gave us the example of the way people look at council block flats as an example of modernity. He said people now look upon these flats as to be filled only with drug addicts, chavs or prostitutes. This thought is also supported by the way in the which they don't look appealing to live in.
