Coventry University’s hockey coach Chris Roberts has been appointed the head coach for England Universities Ladies Hockey Team for the British University Games for a second time in a row.
Chris was appointed the same position for the games in 2008, while working as a head hockey coach in the University of West of England.
The coach now has the responsibility to select 16 elite athletes from universities across the country for extensive training in preparation for the games in 2010.
“The British University Games is a key event in the sporting calendar and so my job will be to ensure that all the athletes are in a peak condition and ready for competition”, Chris said.
For now it is not known who will be the sixteen lucky hockey players to work under the guidance of Chris, as they have to be selected out of a squad of over 30 athletes. “Trials will be held at Birmingham University on January 24 2010, I will then hold additional training sessions in February and March in preparation for the British University Games in April 2010.”
According to Vince Mayne, Coventry University’s Deputy Director of Student Health and Well Being, Chris has been the key figure in the management of all the university’s hockey teams. “Chris has worked hard to create a partnership between the university hockey club and Jaguar Coventry HC”, Vince added. The partnership is now complete and the new club’s name is “Coventry City & University Hockey Club”.
In October, Chris was appointed National Head Coach for the Welsh U16 boys, last year’s runner-ups in the British Games. In addition to mentoring Scott Angliss, Andrew Wilkie and Richard Hasty, three coaches at Coventry University, he is also working with hockey sport scholarship students to develop their skills.
