The Chinese biographical drama “Confucius”, starring Hong Kong star Chow Yun-Fat (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) bumped the blockbuster “Avatar” off cinema screens earlier this year. Speculation suggested Cameron’s masterpiece was pulled because of the similarities with a present sensitive issue in China.
Whilst the reason was not quite clear, the film remained at 3D cinemas, and its Chinese competition was chosen to mark the beginning of the Year of the Tiger.
Crowds did show up at the theatres, but mostly to see “Avatar”. Most of the audience, as well as a historian, present at the “Confucius” screening, were puzzled by all the inaccuracies in the movie.
As things did not look very promising, the Chinese government decided to bring “Avatar” back to some Chinese cinemas – a decision mainly based on the financial performance of the film which reportedly makes approximately 2.5 times more money per day than the Chinese epic.Labels: cueafs |
