  • Project Proposal
    Project Proposal

    Project description
Establishing a written and online publication for the Coventry University East Asian Film Society (CUEAFS) and acting as executive editor.

    Project goal
To create and maintain a suitable outlet for CUEAFS to popularise its interests, activities and accomplishments - both internally for university students and externally for organisations in the film industry.

    Objectives
To create a suitable platform for material about the society, as well as about Asian culture, news and events from the industry, films from the region, etc.
To put together a talented team of writers, to appoint sub-editors and distribute different roles to ensure the smooth running of the project.
To raise awareness among the university students about Asian cinema and culture, as well as the possible opportunities for professional development through participation in the society's activities.

    Project timeline
The first stages of the project have already been approved and its realisation has been scheduled for the beginning of February. The publication will be produced fortnightly from the beginning of February through to the end of academic year 2010/2011. If successful, it will continue in academic year 2011/2012.

    Executive summary
The main purpose of this project is to re-establish1 a platform for the East Asian Film Society to popularise its activities in a formal and professional manner. The publication will be facing mainly outwards and it will be distributed to possible sponsors, as well as existing partners.

This project is appealing to me both personally and professionally. As a journalism student in my second year, an experience as the editor of an independent publication is an invaluable opportunity to get first-hand impressions about the responsibilities that arise out of this role. Moreover, it will provide me with practical skills as to the creation and supervision of a writers team and the co-ordination between different positions operating within the project platform. On the other hand, I have a keen interest in film journalism, which is why this project is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the industry itself and the way organisations attract and keep the interest of sponsors and partners.

I expect this project to showcase my abilities as a leader who is able to make editorial decisions and co-ordinate a team of writers. Additionally, I expect to utilise my journalistic skills, acquired so far, in the process of selecting suitable information and writing style. As an added bonus to my Add+Vantage in Book Publishing as a member of an editors team, I expect to get a practical experience in the process of editing, which will undoubtedly prove useful in my future career.

1 The CUEAFS's newsletter “Jaded Lense” originally ran from the founding of the society in 2009 until the end of academic year 2009/2010, when editor Michael Jarvis discontinued his involvement with the society.
